Christmas time in Vermont is always a wonderful thing. Everyone’s lights are slowly being strung up and new holiday decorations are appearing daily. The magic Christmas elves have been hard at work at the Inn also. Unfortunately, they haven’t shown up at my house yet.
Since I live in Plymouth, I am lucky enough to get to go the Coolidge Holiday Open House http://historicsites.vermont.gov/events/coolidge/holiday_open_house. There are horse drawn sleigh rides, holiday craft making and a wreath making lesson that I especially look forward to going to this year. You can also get your holiday cards ready early and the Plymouth Post Office will be ready with a specially designed and hand cut stamp for postage cancellation. I do this every year and it makes the cards extra special for family far away.
The Plymouth Cheese factory http://www.plymouthartisancheese.com/history will be also holding an open house with cheese and wine tastings. It is a wonderful place for a Vermont gift for the cheese lover in your family.
Today, Plymouth Notch is regarded as one of the best-preserved presidential sites in the nation. The small Vermont hill town is virtually unchanged since the “Homestead Inaugural” in 1923. The homes of Coolidge’s family and neighbors are carefully preserved, as is the village church, general store, cheese factory (still making cheese using the original 1890 recipe), and community dance hall that served as the 1924 Summer White House office.
